If you are thinking about growing your business to new heights in 2019 then you must focus on  growing your employees.

It is no secret that your employees are at the forefront of any business. They are the primary point of contact with your customers and therefore in some sense, they hold the power as they can either make or break your company brand and customer experience. Leadership training to grow your managers and staff is critical if you are going to leverage your business.

Unlike the likes of Google, small business owners can’t afford to keep employees happy and engaged through providing free meals, onsite yoga and climbing walls, among other company perks. Below I have listed 3 key ways to ensure that you are able to keep your staff happy and engaged without blowing company budget.

Make sure that employees know the value of their work.

Most employees feel more motivated and inclined to work harder when they can see the relationship between their day-to-day tasks and how they contribute to the bigger picture. Whenever you assign an employee a new task, make sure that they know why and how their work on the task will help the company succeed. Stress to staff members how their role plays an important part in the company structure; doing so, will help employees to feel more motivated as they will realise how crucial and appreciated their work is for the company.

Empower your employees.

One of the best ways to motivate and empower employees is to give them more responsibility within the company as it will give them the opportunity to demonstrate and achieve their potential – positively impacting the company. Moreover, when employees feel challenged by their work tasks, they tend to put in more effort so that they don’t disappoint and get their responsibility taken away from them. Ultimately, the more responsibility a staff member is given, the more effort they will put into their work – effectively creating a snowball effect.

Do not micro-manage.

Small business owners are often infamous for micro-managing – this is understandable, as most owners will have started their company alone and so will be used to doing everything by themselves. However it is important to stray from micro-managing as it can stunt employee growth and demotivate them when they feel that their boss is constantly looking over their shoulder. This can make employees feel insecure and cause them to constantly depend on you for direction. Instead, encourage employees to think of their own solutions, carry out tasks in their own way and deliver results on their own terms.

How do you engage with your employees?
