With many years of experience in the construction industry, Tom founded rubber4roofs back in 2010. Since then, the business has provided trade and DIY customers with EPDM flat roofing systems via its trade counter and ecommerce website.

Andy first met Tom in November 2019, when his business had started to run him.  He’d hired, and subsequently fired an MD, and had needed to step back into the business, working 60 hours a week. He had a management team, but whilst being great team members, they weren’t really managing.

Within 12 months of working with Andy, Tom’s business grew by 50% and the net margins saw 140% growth in profit. Tom was able to drastically change his lifestyle, spending much more time away from the business, whilst the managers ran the business for him.

Andy worked with Tom to create systems in the business and realigned the mindsets of the management team so that they were managing their teams, all during a period of rapid growth.  Tom was able to manage the business in a couple of hours per week, having confidence in the capabilities of the management team and the systems in the business, allowing him to play to his strengths, creating new solutions for customers.

Along his journey, Tom navigated numerous challenges – supply chain problems coupled with a shift in market dynamics meant that the shape of the business changed more than once, all resulting in a business which now serves more channels, is more robust and is progressing more rapidly towards the business vision.

Almost four years to the day that Tom began working with Andy, he placed his business into an Employee Ownership Trust, a testament to the development of his business and management team. The business has more than doubled in size and its profits have more than tripled, and in complete alignment with Tom’s values. The businesses value has increased by nearly 400%, which has allowed Tom to exit for a life-changing sum.

“Whilst I’ve retained a 25% ownership of my business, I’ve decided to stay on as Managing Director with the goal to help the team triple the size of the business and ensure that the business continues to serve them and bring greater value through innovation to our customers.  I’ve got the time to do it, and am now playing to my strengths, working three days per week in term time only, giving me the capability to enjoy amazing personal and family experiences with the benefit of significant financial security.”
