2020 challenged business owners like never before.

For a while it felt like we were all in the same boat. No one knew what was coming next, how long this would last or what long term impact it would have – we felt uncertain. But then things started to change.

Instead of one boat there were three.

There was the one moored at the docks with their hands tied because they simply weren’t allowed to open their doors and invite customers in.  There was nothing they could do about it.

There was the boat that was stuck on the rocks. The sailor not knowing how to get it back on the water. And, instead of calling for help waited to see if anyone would come and rescue it. Quickly running out of reserves.

Then there was the speed boat powering through, changing direction and making waves of its own.

We still find ourselves fighting against the global pandemic so, which boat are you in right now?

We spend the majority of our time talking to business owners and what we see and hear are the real impacts this has had on their life – and believe me it’s not all the doom and gloom we hear in the press every day.

Those on the speed boats have found new opportunities, they have taken some risks and for many their businesses have gone from strength to strength. They’ve sought help where they have needed it and they’ve gained new knowledge to adapt their business to a changing landscape.

What could we learn from them?

We could learn that the old adage that there is ‘opportunity in adversity’ might just be true.

  • Is Covid giving me the excuse to stop doing something I really just don’t want to do anymore?
  • Where are my opportunities?
  • What do I really want for my life? How am I going to get it?
