“We just don’t have the time!”—Business psychology explains why destructive beliefs harm business performance.

How often have you heard someone say “I just don’t have time”?  The truth is, we all have the time! There are twenty-four hours in the day… and guess what, we all have the same twenty-four hours.

Now unless you are “Doctor Who” you will experience the same hour, the same minute, the same second as everybody else. So the hard truth is, we do have time. The question is what do we invest our time in? Notice how I say “invest” time.

Investing time is the key phrase here. Straight away by seeing time as something we “spend” rather than something that we just go through changes our perception on what time means. As business owners, this is critical because we are “spending our time” all the time in relation to the business—we either spend it on tasks that can be worth £10 per hour to the business, or £100 per hour to the business; or even £1000 per hour.

How many £10 an hour tasks are you doing in your business right now?

Now as your business grows those £10 tasks should be leveraged with your team. If you have a business, with a team, and you are the person doing the £10 an hour tasks… then let me break it to you simply… you are doing something wrong!

Not only will your company NOT be leverage-able, but you can kiss those holidays away goodbye too!

The same goes for the £100 hour tasks, they should be taken care of by your managers. This leaves you with the high value per hour tasks left for you to do, the £1000 per hour tasks. These are the tasks that only you can deal with—and are the most important tasks.

What Are £1000 per/hour Tasks

The £1000 an hour tasks are tasks that only you can deal with in your business. They bring the highest return for your business, and they most likely are going to be the biggest contribution to your future business success. These tasks can range from holding leadership meetings to leverage your team; getting the critical tasks done that will grow your business; and most importantly, doing the tasks that will build your business to operate without you.

What are the £1000 tasks in your business?

So, once you remove all the £10 jobs out of your business, it becomes clear where your time is better well spent—On the £1000 tasks that build the business. If you are a director or business owner, all your time should be spent here. IF you are stuck doing the £10 an hour jobs this is called  “Fire Fighting”—this is a destructive habit for you and your business.

The Psychology

Here is the hard truth. We become the result of the habits we do everyday. The phrase “We just don’t have the time” is something that is ingrained in your subconscious and has been passed down by your parents and your grandparents as a quick excuse to get out of something. IT IS TIME TO LET THESE BULLSHIT BELIEFS GO! Because what got you here isn’t going to get you to where you want to be.

Now the top 5% of businesses make 95% of the commercial money in the world—and there is a reason for it. The habits they have and their beliefs about money are totally different to the other 95%. If we are going to move closer to (or be in) the top 5% we need to change our beliefs around time. Because yes, time is money.

Results in Your Business and Your Personal Life

We invest time in what we value. Everyone has time because we all have the same 24 hours. Where the problem is is that most business owners aren’t clear on where they are going so they don’t know where to invest their time. They aren’t clear on the £1000 tasks that will get them results and are too caught up in the £10 jobs that they shouldn’t be doing. By doing more of the £1000 tasks allows business owners to spend less time on fire fighting. Using leverage in this way business owners can spend more time on building their business legacy, get their time back, and make more time available to spend in their personal life.

Remember the business is a vehicle for your success. It needs your attention so it can produce to support you.
